Public schooling in Whitney Oaks is provided by Rocklin Unified School District. The district operates about 15 schools throughout the city, serving 9,200 students with a student-to-teacher ratio of 20:8. RUSD schools are well-regarded for their challenging programs. Campuses within Whitney Oaks include Twin Oaks Elementary, Granite Oaks Middle School and Rocklin High School.

Whitney Oaks was developed on land once owned by J.P. Whitney, a rancher who was, at one point, the wealthiest man in Placer County. Whitney came to the region in 1853 looking for gold. He was so impressed with the beauty of the Sierra Nevada foothills that he abandoned the search for gold and set himself up as a rancher and farmer. His estate, known as Spring Valley Ranch, became one of the most profitable ranches in California. The expanse of 20,000 acres was used to breed sheep and horses as well as to grow oranges and grapes. Whitney would eventually build four mansions, a small golf course and tennis courts on the property.

Whitney’s interest in golf remains part of the Whitney Oaks community today. It is one of the most highly regarded golf communities in Placer County simply because the homes are beautiful and the golf club facilities are excellent. The golf course itself, designed by Johnny Miller and Fred Bliss, is known for abundant and challenging water features. As well, the area is home to a variety of wildlife and it isn’t uncommon to see wild turkeys, geese and deer wandering the grounds.
